frequently asked questions

Who do you photograph?

My family photography includes couples, maternity, newborn, children, parents and grandparents of all ages. Whatever it is that family means to you, I will be there to capture it.  I use 'family' as a catch all term while understanding that families come in all different shapes and sizes, each with a different story to tell.

For portraits and lifestyle sessions, I typically work within the creative fields - photographers, artists, makers or small brands and businesses where a concern for sustainability and the environment is high on the agenda. However, I am excited to work with anyone who connects with my style and approach and feels that I am the photographer for them. A personal connection is so important to me when we work together.

What locations do you cover?

I'm currently based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire but I cover all areas of London (within reason!) and other surrounding areas within 1-2 hours from my home, including North and Central London. Travel costs may be additional to your session fee, depending on your location. Please do contact me and enquire further.

I'm a little awkward in front of the camera, is that ok?

This is what almost everyone tells me before we work together, so you're not alone. I totally get it can be awkward to have a camera pointed at you, and I feel exactly the same way. But, you're in good hands. It's my job to take pictures and to make the people in front of my lens feel comfortable while I do it. Treat our time together as a chance to slow down, be in the moment and just enjoy it. I'm really fun, and very gentle, I promise! All I need from you is to be yourself, trust me and be open and honest when we work together.

Can you tell me a bit more about your photography style?

I have a very relaxed and natural way of working, shooting in a documentary style using natural light. Almost everything I do is candid and unposed, with the aim of capturing you and your family just as you are. I'm interested in emotions, movement and human connection and I look to bring these out in my photography as best I can. I will direct and pose you a little, so I can find the best light, encourage interaction and create the best images, but mostly I am just looking to bring out and capture who you really are.

What's your availability like?

My availability is fairly limited at the moment because I have a young daughter at home with me, so typically I shoot on Wednesdays and Sundays when I have childcare. In busy seasons between March-June and September-December I can get booked up quickly, so if you're interested in working me with me I do recommend getting in touch early. Please do contact me and enquire about your preferred dates, I'll always do my best to accommodate you.

Please note: I’ll be on maternity leave from mid Feb 2019 until mid June 2019, and won’t be taking on any bookings during this period.

What type of photo sessions do you offer?

Currently I have packages available for families and creatives - they range from shorter sessions to a series of 4 sessions booked across a year. Documentary family and straightforward portrait sessions typically last for two hours, with newborn sessions closer to three. I occasionally offer shorter mini sessions of around half an hour, but these are offered seasonally for special events or occasions i.e Mother's Day. Lifestyle portrait sessions range from a few hours to a few days, depending on how much you would like me to capture. These types of sessions are always bespoke and tailored to your requirements, so please contact me for rates.

How do I book a session with you?

It's super easy! Just send me an email or fill in my contact form letting me know you are interested in a photography session with me, include any possible dates if you have them, and I'll get back to you within a day or two to send you some more information and book in a Skype chat or phone call before you commit to anything.

I am interested in booking a session, but I have some questions first. How do I go about asking them?

You can send me an email with any questions, or if you'd rather talk face to face I offer a free 30 minute Skype/Facetime call where we can discuss your requirements for a shoot, or any questions or concerns you might have. There's no obligation to book after that. If you're local then I'd love to meet for coffee!

Anything in the first twelve weeks is a newborn session, however if you really want to capture that fresh, curled up tiny baby then you want to aim for the first two weeks. I love to capture all ages of babies and children, because they all have such different characteristics and mean no two families or shoots are the same. It's really a personal choice what age you book a session for your new baby, and that's something I can talk you through when we have our pre-session Skype chat.

Where do your sessions take place?

Documentary family sessions typically take place in your own home, but we can also head out to another nearby location as well depending on which package you choose. My favourite thing is to photograph children and families running free outdoors, so I have created The Wildness Tonic Sessions specifically for nature loving families. Lifestyle portrait sessions for makers and small businesses usually take place in your studio, home or workspace so we can capture the essence of you and your venture. Mini sessions, when offered, usually take place in a local park or other outdoor location.

When do sessions take place?

I do my best to book sessions around the best light. Early mornings after sunrise and evenings in the hours before sunset are when the light is low and soft, and makes for some beautiful outdoor portraits. For indoor sessions, a little more light is ideal so I usually try for a time we will get the most daylight - I'll always take my cue from you for when the light is best in your home or studio. When working with children, having their cooperation is ideal so trying to find a time when they will be at their happiest is also a priority. Ideally we combine happy kiddos with great light, and everybody wins!

It's perfectly understandable that everyone has different boundaries when it comes to sharing pictures of themselves or their children on the internet and social media. It's something we can discuss before booking, and I am more than happy to work within your comfort zone. Please note however, that promoting my work on social media and on my blog and portfolio is essential to my business and how I attract more clients, and I am always grateful to clients for allowing me to share the images I take of them.

How many digital images will I receive after our session?

You'll receive a set number of high-res digital files depending on the photography session you choose. There is always an option to purchase additional images or a package upgrade to receive more images. All images will be delivered in a beautiful online gallery for your to download, print and share. More information on my pricing and packages here.

Do you offer print services?

I offer some fine art prints as part of one of my family packages, please see my pricing page for more information. When you receive your online gallery, you'll be able to order prints, albums and other gifts directly from there, and also share with family members so they can order images and prints directly as well. It's super easy!

Do you travel for photoshoots?

If I can work logistics around childcare, then yes, I love to travel. In fact if you book me for a shoot where I get to travel somewhere fun, you might just become my new best friend. Typically it's easy enough for me to travel in and around London, or anywhere I can get to you and back in a day. I sometimes travel further afield to other UK or European cities, and am almost always up for an adventure. My travel dates for 2018 are listed here. Please note, travel costs outside of my home town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire will be additional.

Do you shoot weddings?

I don't have a wedding portfolio, because it's honestly not my favourite type of thing to shoot. I am big on personal connection, and I find a busy wedding day full of people not conducive to making the art and relationships I want to make. That said, I love a small, intimate wedding with unconventional details. A few people, an interesting location, an abundance of love, laughter and light. If that sounds like your jam and you connect with my style, then let's chat.
