Sometimes when you pick up your child you can feel the map of your own bones beneath your hands, or smell the scent of your skin in the nape of his neck. This is the most extraordinary thing about motherhood - finding a piece of yourself separate and apart that all the same you could not live without.
— Jodi Picoult

Of all the different kinds of sessions I do, photographing a mother and her child is my absolute favourite thing. It's such a special bond, a relationship that changes over time and has so many different layers. I'm endlessly inspired by the mothers I meet and get the privilege to photograph; their love, patience, selfishness and sacrifice. It takes a lot out of you, caring for another human being, especially when they rely on you for so much in those early years. Everything is an extreme, with the highest points of joy and the lowest points of despair.

It's a tough gig, sometimes, being a mother. Pregnancy, birth, nurturing a newborn with your own body...it's exhausting, and an ongoing practice to find space and time for yourself amongst the often overwhelming responsibility of caring for your family. I know from my own experience that sometimes it can feel like we get the sharp end of the stick. Our young children feel safest with us, so it's with us they push back against the hardest. But the bond they have with us, their first home inside our wombs, it's irreplaceable and incomparable to anything else. They might shout at us louder, but they wrap their arms around us tighter too.

This session with Katy and Martha was so wonderful, because I really felt I got to be a part of and capture an honest, full range of what it's like to have a young child. The energy, the fierce love, the attachment and of course, the tears. There was running and hugging and falling over, whispering, laughing, crying and throwing sand. I got to race around, play and laugh, encourage a little madness in all three of us.

The kind of session that fills up my heart for what I do.
